Sewing gives you the opportunity to create. I think humans were intended to create. We feel empty if we don't. Creating is fun and satisfying!

Sewing is rewarding. It gives us the opportunity to be producers rather than merely consumers, to make things with our own hands and minds for ourselves, our families, or our friends.

Sewing can be an enjoyable hobby. There are reasons to sew even if you don't absolutely love it but many people do love it and get a lot of pleasure from sewing.

Sewing can save you money. Making your own clothing and home items isn't always cheaper than buying (and there are other very practical reasons for sewing besides saving money) but it can be cheaper, especially if what you want isn't readily available or can only be custom made. Here are a few points to consider:

• You have the same frugal shopping tricks available to you when shopping for sewing supplies that you do when shopping for ready-made items, plus more.

• Not only can you comparison shop between various ready-made options but you can also add home-made options into your comparisons.

• You can repair, alter, and recycle ready-made items (plus your home sewn items), giving them a longer useful life.

• Custom made items will usually be cheaper if you make them yourself.

• Hard to find items (due to fit, style, size, color, quality, or a combination of those) may cost you more to obtain (travel expenses, shipping, mail order returns, etc.) than to make. Beyond that, there is always the possibility that after all your time, money, and energy spent looking for what you need you still won't find it!

Sewing eliminates the problem of finding modest and otherwise suitable clothing. It puts YOU in charge of what is available.

Sewing gives you clothing that fits. Even if you can usually find clothing that fits you, sewing (whether you are making your own or altering ready made) will give you a better fit. If you cannot find clothing that fits you—whether an entire wardrobe or just certain problem items—and you cannot afford to have the items made for you, sewing is the answer.

Sewing gives you virtually endless color and style options for your clothing and home decor.

Sewing gives you freedom. You don't have to depend on the decisions of designers and manufacturers for what you wear and decorate your home with. If you don't find what you want in ready-made (when you want it) you can turn to the vast selection of patterns, books, tutorials, fabrics, trims, etc. in the sewing world (and even throw in some ready-made items in as raw materials) and combine them in any way you want. You have so many more options when you can sew!

Sewing provides items for your family that simply are not available ready made. You can buy some things, but you can make almost anything you can imagine. Don't limit yourself and your family—learn to sew!
