for reading, memorization, recitation, and singing:
and Paraphrases In Verse of Several Passages of Sacred Scripture
to the first advent of our Lord, and suggestions on how to use them.
Huffman for the enjoyment,
instruction, and edification of adults and children.
A few years ago someone gave my family
a Scottish Bible printed in the 1800's. What a treasure! This
gigantic Bible (clearly intended to only be used at home and not
carried to church!) contains all of the “Psalms in Metre” plus
several other selected scriptures in meter. As someone who likes to
create music but isn't so good about coming up with words, I was
thrilled. My mother often listens to my tunes and finds words in
songbooks that match them and here was pages and pages of potential
words! I realize that not everyone writes music, but these verses may
be a delight to anyone who wants some “new” songs—in this case,
quite old ones—to play with.
The scriptures in meter are not
exclusive to this Bible, of course. I found one of them (Psalm 23) in
my hymnal labeled as a Scottish Psalter. I have even seen some of the
Psalms in Metre available online. However, I would find a scanned
page of relatively small print rather inferior to sing by. Thus this
little volume! You don't have to read scanned pages, you don't have
to try to sing out of a book that weighs as much as a small child,
and with large and giant print versions, everyone can join in the
singing (and get the words right) not just the young ones. You also
don't have to wonder how to find a suitable tune—that's explained
Scriptures included in Messiah I are Is. 42:1-12,
Luke 1:46-55, Luke 2:8-14,
Luke 4:18, 19.
